Benmore Merino Stud

The Benmore merino stud was established in 1983 by Jim Sutherland.  The stud has maintained a focus on quality spinners wool and has earned a reputation for quality white wools.

In recent years the stud has had a significant focus on improving performance through the careful use of outside sires based on their EBVs and physical attributes.

Check out the Sires page here .

The breeding objective at Benmore is:

  • Rapid post-weaning growth (PWT EBV of 5kg and above)

  • White spinners wool suitable for high-end fashion as well as active outdoor

  • Increase clean fleece weight (YCFW EBV of 15% and above)

  • Maintain micron

  • Increase muscling (YEMD of 1.8mm and above)

  • Increase fat (YFAT of 0.8 and above)

In most years, an artificial insemination program is undertaken with the best rams we can find in the industry to move us forward. This policy has delivered some significant gains to both our stud flock and our commercial flock in recent years.

The merino stud is the foundation of the half-bred and quarter-bred rams that we also produce.
